Summary:
This work demonstrates that socialism and art do not necessarily have to be in opposition, at least in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Contributors are academics in art, music, art history, and museum studies, as well as museum and gallery professionals working in Europe and the US. They question the validity of current frameworks that preference Western aesthetics as a universal norm against which the GDR appears as a deviation. The first part of the book explores multiple discourses that have shaped the production and reception of art in the public sphere of the GDR, looking at audience-oriented media such as murals, film, and public monuments. Essays in part 2 place East German art in dialogue with the West and explore influences that transcend the ideological divisions of the Cold War. Part 3 evaluates GDR music on its own terms, and part 4 examines practical issues of dealing with housing and exhibiting the legacy of the GDR's visual arts since the fall of the Wall. The book is illustrated with b&w and color photos of installations and works of art. Kelly teaches music at Edinburgh University. Wlodarski teaches music at Dickinson College.
