Summary:
A Roman Catholic priest in the West of England, Miller is a long-time student of maritime social history. Here he introduces the life of Hopkins (1861-1922), who was an Anglican seaman's chaplain in Burma and India, formed a merchant seamen's union, and back in England led the first and to date only international strike of merchant seamen in 1911. His activism led to accusations of sexual impropriety, murder, financial malpractice, and other crimes. Among the topics are early contacts with sailors, London interlude 1888-89, ministry in Calcutta, and the strike. Distributed in North America by The David Brown Book Co.
