- Summary:
- This is a thoughtfully prepared two-volume reference that makes no claim to comprehensiveness but instead aims to cover neglected topics pertaining to the region. The focus is on topics that are usually given relatively light attention in studies of political history and conflict. Material is organized in sections on the politics of governing in the Middle East, economics, the media, religion, cultures (Arab, Iranian, Israeli), peoples, and women. Editor Rubin is also the author of several chapters and the concluding essay; he is affiliated with the Global Research in International Affairs Center at the Interdisciplinary Center, Israel (the acronym is GLORIA) as are several of the contributors. Other authors include academics in political science, communications, and art history based in Israel and the US, and several independent scholars.
