- Summary:
- This narrative overview of German history begins with the impact of Napoleon on Germany and goes on to cover the rise and fall of the German Empire, the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich, the division of Germany, the collapse of Communism, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and reunification. While continuing to offer a narrative history, this second edition places greater emphasis on events within the context of social structures, economic factors, and cultural attitudes. It delves deeper into issues related to modernization, class, religion, and gender. This edition also includes much more detail on the German Democratic Republic, and adds some information on Germany's reaction to recent political events. The book includes 32 b&w historical photos and illustrations and six b&w maps. Kitchen is professor emeritus of history at Simon Fraser University, Canada.
