Summary:
This book dedicated to Jurgen M. Meisel on the occasion of his 65th birthday (March 2009) presents papers from a workshop in Hamburg, Germany that brought together friends, colleagues, and former students. Editors Esther Rinke (Goethe U. Frankfurt) and Tanja Kupisch (U. of Hamburg) have arranged 25 papers in sections under the broad themes of the similarities and differences between children learning their first and second languages; the acquisition of sentence structure and functional categories; autonomous development vs. crosslinguistic influence in bilingual first language acquisition; and language acquisition, language contact, and diachronic change. These are all areas to which Meisel has contributed. A sampling of specific topics: placement of infinitives in successive child language acquisition, strict interfaces and three kinds of multiple grammar, delay and acceleration in bilingual first language acquisition, and the relation between acceptability and frequency.
