- Summary:
- As a result of a number of factors, including the tendency of Western historians to focus on the activities of British diplomats in Russia and the tendency of the Soviets to disparage the diplomatic service of Imperialist Russia, the Russian side of Anglo-Russian relations prior to World War I has largely been neglected. Focusing in particular on the activities of Count Alexsandr Benckendorff, the Russian ambassador in London, and the circumstances behind and resulting from the Anglo-Russian convention of 1907, Soroka (U. of Western Ontario, Canada) presents this work as a corrective. She concludes that Benckendorff's limited intellectual qualities and desire to please his British dinner hosts (confusing dinner invitations for influence) played a key role in the formation of the French-Anglo-Russian entente and the stifling of any efforts to improve Russo-German relations in a manner that may have avoided war.
