Summary:
Published in conjunction with an exhibition at Guildhall Art Gallery, London, this elegantly produced oversize volume (9.5x11") contains a collection of 12 essays discussing the artist' life and work in detail. Gilbert (1817-1891) was prolific, active among his peers, and well known during his life; yet he has not received nearly the amount of attention given to other members of the Victorian art world such as Leighton, Watts, Millais, and Burne-Jones. This volume rectifies the neglect by offering a detailed examination of his life, oeuvre, and distinctive contributions. The essays accompany presentation of large-scale historical paintings, small landscape watercolors, illustrations for novels and children's books, newspaper illustrations, and ephemera. Coverage includes a detailed look at Gilbert's frames as well as his sources and selection of painting materials. The presentation is complete with chronology, technical examination of watercolors and oil paintings, a list of sold or exhibited works during the artist's lifetime, and other supplementary material.
