Summary:
Yamagishi (British and American studies, Nazan U., Japan) offers a comparative exploration of how World War II shaped the health insurance systems of Japan and the United States. He argues that while both countries expanded health insurance coverage, they adopted different insurance systems (Japan's being public and nearly universal while the US relied on private insurance companies), largely due to variations in their experiences with war, including duration and depth of mobilization, sequence of the war, and result of the war.
