- Summary:
- The poems have been popular on stage since they first appeared in the first century BC, and venerable classicist Van Sickle draws from that long tradition to present cues to performing his English translation from the Latin. He also shows how Virgil threads themes with pointed variation to creating a unitary design that, he complains, too many translators miss entirely, filling the work with their own casual inspirations. Among his clues are Eclogue two: new Roman myth frames restless song in love; Eclogue four: full vatic song, Eclogue six: freed singer-slave put down; and Eclogue nine: Roman mythic frame and vatic song dispelled. The volume is designed as a course text, but can also be read and enjoyed by general readers. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
