Summary:
Hettle (history, U. of Northern Iowa) explains his novel approach, which consists of examining what was written about Jackson immediately following the Civil War, and examining the genesis of those writings--the context of the expressed opinions and the authors' biases and particular points of view. He has honed the scope to produce a slim book with plenty of purposeful omissions, including dull or redundant speeches as well as any attempt to analyze biographies produced in recent years. The aim of the study is to shed light on the man, the myth, and the processes of myth-creation through a close look at the efforts of Jackson's early biographers.
