- Summary:
- This book is not about international organizations as a means to cope with the challenges of globalization. Instead, it asks fundamental questions about the appropriate roles of national governments and other stakeholders in promoting economic and social development around the world. These questions are addressed from the perspectives of academic disciplines including sociology, law, political science, and economics. The book presents an analytical concept of governance which can be applied in comparative institutional studies. The first group of chapters addresses themes of conflict and cooperation such as secular statehood and Islam in Turkey, and the EU and Middle East conflict. Part 2 examines national strategies on issues such unorthodox economic and government reforms in India and China, and the African development tragedy. The third section describes emerging global actors and networks, with chapters on the end of the Western-dominated world order, global govnernance and the private sector, and the impact of social movements on globalization and the labor market. The book's readers will include scholars and researchers in economics and political economy, as well as those in NGOs and development agencies. Ahrens is affiliated with PFH Private University of Applied Sciences Gottingen, Germany. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
