Beginning with an overview of the recent history of the region and the creation of the state in the wake of the breakup of the Soviet Union, the work discusses topics such as urban classes and food security; rural food sovereignty; gender and food; ethnicity, nationalism and minorities; and Islam, hunger, and violence. Additional sections discuss comparative perspectives with American poverty and food insecurity. The work includes several black and white photographs.
