Summary:
Wollock (English, Texas A&M U.) draws on an impressive array of material in this broad commentary on courtly love and chivalry, with examples from the crusades, medieval and early modern literature, and liberally mixing in Gothic Revival and Romantic works from the 19th century forward to the present day. Surveying the lives of a large number of medieval and early modern figures, Wollock argues for a re-assessment of the notion of chivalry and chivalric lives to include women in courtly settings, thus correcting post-medieval definitions. She offers a similar survey in her discussion of courtly love. Though it serves as part of her argument that chivalric mores exist today, the constant use of contemporary examples alongside medieval ones ultimately dilutes her argument into one of generalities.
