- Summary:
- The terminology of communication is one of the buzzwords bandied about in contemporary society as the panacea to personal, social, political and economic problems. There seems to be a widespread belief that if we are able to communicate better then these problems would have a better possibility of resolution. In addition, talk of communication is frequently equated with the various communication and information technologies that proliferate today's world; for many people, a discussion on communication necessarily entails a discussion of the media or the internet. In these various scenarios the concept of communication is always taken for granted; it is assumed that everybody knows what communication entails since we communicate all the time and therefore any theorisation on the concept of would be redundant. What is needed, therefore, is an analysis of the dynamics involved in the act of communication that highlights its context of production, reception and effects. These different facets provide the framework for an analysis of a selected number of theorists who have contributed to furthering our understanding of the various aspects involved in the concept of communication.
