- Summary:
- A World War I drama about lazy James Apperson, son of an industrious aristocrat and his wife, and how he is coaxed into joining the Army by his father and girlfriend when the U.S. enters the War. Upon entering the Army, James is sent to France to serve his tour of duty. While in France, he and a couple of his comrades meet and all take an amorous interest in Mélisande, a French farm girl. During a violent battle of the War, his two comrades are killed and James is seriously wounded and is hospitalized with a missing leg. During his hospitilization, he loses the whereabouts of Mélisande, his true love, and returns home to the United States as a hero to his family, but with a broken heart. After arriving home, he confesses his love of Mélisande to his mother and she encourages him to return to France to seek Mélisande, because his former girlfriend has fell in love with his brother. James returns to France and triumphantly finds his true love awaiting and missing him.
