- Summary:
- Autograph album, or album amicorum, of Friederich Bauer, of Allstedt (in today's Sachsen-Anhalt) containing approximately 100 contributions. The volume has an illustrated title page that reads: Pour la mémoire de J. C. Fréderic Brauer, né à Allstedt (For the memory of J. C. Friedrich Brauer, born at Allstedt); the date is written unclearly but is probably meant to be 1803, the year of the earliest dated inscriptions. The spine is imprinted with the title Pour l'amour et l'amitié (For love and friendship), and the name Brauer. The volume has contemporary page numbering, with a scheme that begins at p. 130. The most frequently occurring place names in the inscriptions are Allstedt, Halle, Sangerhausen, and Naumburg. Brauer appears to have been at university in Halle between 1805 and 1809; almost all of the signers from there give their hometown in their signature, and two specify their student status (Candidatus litteraturae, p. 283; Cand. Pharm., p. 297). One signs as music director in Halle in 1809 (p. 206). One contribution is from the owner's brother, J. W. C. Brauer (Querfurth, 1813; p. 263); and the latest dated inscription is from his brother-in-law, Carl Eduard Theune (Halle, 1816; p. 155). Among the sayings or poems are quotations from Lavater (p. 177), Klopstock (p. 283, 333), Kotzebue (p. 294), and Schiller (p. 303). Included are five accomplished watercolor landscapes (p. 146, 170, 176, 221, 318); and a swatch of embroidery with a flower design (p. 166). The latter is among the few contributions by women.
