- Summary:
- Autograph album, or album amicorum, of Amalia Bernhardina Sophia Marburg, of Berlenburg (Bad Berleburg, in today's North Rhine-Westphalia), containing approximately 44 contributions, with almost all dated between 1793 and 1798. The volume has a title page that reads: Der Freundschaft gewidmet von (Dedicated to friendship by; p. 1), with a silhouette tipped in below, in place of the creator's name; and the spine title: Denkmahl der Freundscha[ft] (Memorials of friendship). The name of the original owner is not found in the book but evidence for identification includes inscriptions by two brothers, Carl Marburg (p. 9) and Daniel Marburg (p. 90); and a note on a card at back (tipped in, p. 170), signed by Ludwig Carl Althaus, addressed to his parents and dated 1816. The date in the latter card is the only occurrence of a date after 1798. The inscriptions are often sayings or poems in rhyme, and are sometimes illustrated with drawn, painted or embroidered designs or scenes; two silhouettes from contributors are included (tipped in on leaves between p. 11 and 12, and p. 43 and 44). Among the illustrations, of particular note are an embroidered stem of flowers (p. 79) and four full-page landscapes, in colored pencil or watercolor (p. 60, 86), black ink (p.88), or pencil (leaf between 93 and 94). Place names in the inscriptions include Berlenburg, Siegen, Gütersloh, Elsoff, Geismar, Giessen, and Kirchheim. Family names that occur several times include Gläser, Jüngst, Koltrop, Marburg, and Werner. The volume has an index of names at the back (p. 176-183). A note written on the inside front cover (Wahrscheinlich Vorfahre von Johanna Althaus, verheiratet Schulz) implies that a certain Johanna Schulz, née Althaus, evidently a descendant of the original owner, at some point had the book in her possession
