- Summary:
- Knowledge of equine exercise physiology and understanding of its contribution to management of equine athletes and their diseases has increased immensely in the last 20 years. Equine Sports Medicine and Surgery: Basic and Clinical Sciences of the Equine Athlete is a textbook that, for the first time, provides a comprehensive approach to the equine athlete, including the basic physiology of exercise and training, recognition and treatment of clinical problems of athletes, and veterinary management of equine athletes. Equine Sports Medicine and Surgery presents a body system-by-body system approach to the equine athlete. Each body system is discussed beginning with detailed coverage of the responses to exercise and training followed by in-depth discussion of diseases of the equine athlete. These sections are then followed by chapters dealing with veterinary aspects of training and competing horses including Thoroughbreds, Standardbreds, Quarter horses, 3-day event horses, endurance horses, polo ponies and others. Further chapters include nutrition of athletic horses, anesthesia, parasite control, vaccination, conditions of the aged athlete, reproductive management, transportation and regulation of international movement, drug use and more.
