- Summary:
- Higgins (English and medieval studies, U. of Victoria) presents the first English translation of this medieval work of fiction from the original French (around 1400). A bestseller in its time, the account purported to be a travel memoir of journeys throughout the Far East but no evidence has been found for the existence of Mandeville. Higgins provides an introduction placing the work in historical context and providing background on previous scholarship and notes on translation methodology. Also included are several related texts, some of which appear here in English for the first time, as well as supplemental notes and commentary.
