Summary:
Barghouti (a founding member of the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel and the Palestinian Civil Society Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign) lays out the case for adopting similar tactics against Israeli injustice towards the Palestinians that successfully ended South African apartheid--namely, constructing an international boycott, divestment, and sanctions campaign, led by Palestinian civil society groups, to isolate Israel until it fully complies with its obligation under international law. Specifically, Barghouti (and his colleagues) demand an end to the occupation and colonization of all lands occupied in 1967 and a dismantling of the "apartheid wall" in the West Bank; recognition of the right of Palestinian citizens of Israel to full equality; and respecting, protecting, and promoting the right of return for Palestinian refugees. He reflects on the reasons why such a campaign is needed (i.e., Israeli intransigence and American international hegemony), explores lessons from the anti-apartheid boycott movement, and considers issues of tactics and strategy.
