- Summary:
- This two-volume encyclopedia consists of a combination of conceptual/thematic articles and primary documents addressing historical, political, and legal aspects of human rights in the United States (although many international issues are of necessity included). The approximately 300 alphabetical articles, from "Accountability/Accountable" to "Xenophobia," occupy the first half of the first volume and offer brief definitions, accompanied by longer discussions of significance. Terms discussed include, to cite just a few examples, "Affirmative Action," "Alien Tort Claims Act," "Civil War," "Gender-Based Violence," "Geneva Conventions," "Extrajudicial Executions," "High Commissioner for Human Rights," "Involuntary Servitude," "Patriot Act," "Sanctions," and "Terrorism." The remainder of the first volume and the first third of the second volume present a wealth of US and international primary documents, including many UN and other international organization documents, humanitarian law and international criminal law documents, and US-generated documents. Finally, 18 appendices provide further information on a range of topics including the chronology of human rights issues in the US, alternative forms of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, treaty analysis and interpretation, status of treaties applicable to the United States, select US legislation and congressional resolutions, and human rights education, among others.
