Summary:
The author acknowledges that this study has roots in a paper she wrote roughly 20 years ago and states that "...what started as a fairly straightforward analysis of contemporary men's skating evolved into a broad historical project that spanned more than two centuries and several national contexts." Adams (kinesiology, health studies, sociology, Queen's U., Canada) examines how the sport transformed from a men's sport (which it was until the late 1800s) into a sport identified as feminine. Supporting the text is a section of b&w photos of male skating stars, including the current Canadian national champion, Patrick Chan, who, according to the author is "fortunate to be skating in an era when men's skating seems to be less constrained by gender stereotypes than it was in the 1990s."
