Summary:
We have found a high-degree of temporal correlations of the low frequency fluctuations of signal intensities from the resting human brain, both within and across the functional cortex. Multiple slices of resting-state fMRI data have been analyzed with a fuzzy clustering method (FCM). Anatomical functional areas (motor, visual, auditory) are grouped together with distinctive temporal patterns, both within and across hemispheres. In addition, FCM results suggest this correlation comes from synchronized neural activity through anatomical connections, and the accompanying fluctuations in blood flow is secondary to brain activity.
