- Summary:
- Sparling (post-doctoral fellow, political science, McGill U., Canada) has done an admirable job of parsing the philosophy of the influential Hamann. He details, among other topics, Hamann's interpretation and response to Moses Mendelssohn's Jerusalem oder uber religiose Macht und Judentum, coming down on the side of Hobbes; his difference of opinion with Kant's notion of God; and offers a point-by-point argument of Hamann's critique of Kant's Critique of pure reason. The study concludes with an extended discussion of the troublesome notion of Hamann as Romantic idealist, with lengthy treatment of his attitude toward aesthetics and his opposition to the Enlightenment's devotion to creativity and taste.
