- "Mathieu" is een tachtig bladzijden lang gedicht dat zich van strofe naar strofe zingt. Terwijl het in een traditie van het Nederlandse modernisme uit het interbellum lijkt te staan, is het toch onvergelijkbaar met Nijhoff, Hoornik of Marsman: het is verhalend maar onparafraseerbaar, internationaal maar Nederlands, traditioneel maar vernieuwend, en vooral: diepzinnig maar helder.
