- Summary:
- Differing from both traditional civil rights historians, who limit their focus to the 10 years between the Montgomery bus boycott and the Selma Voter Rights Act, and revisionists who broaden the timeline from the 1920's through present day, Aldridge (history, Davidson College) narrates the major events in the history of African American civil rights from emancipation in 1863 to the early 1970s, when he argues that institutionalized racism essentially ended and a post-civil rights era began. Among many topics, he considers the politics surrounding the birth of Jim Crow laws; the Great Migration of the African Americans to the North in the early 20th century; formation of the NAACP; the impact of the New Deal, World War II, and postwar cultural changes on civil rights; and the Black Power movement, Malcom X, and urban poverty in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
