Summary:

Dodson (archaeology and anthropology, University of Bristol)tells the story of the decline and fall of Egypt's nineteenth dynasty. Starting with the confusion following the Amarna Period, this dynasty included the famous and extremely long-lived Rameses II. Dodson lays out the available information, stating when it is uncertain and when others have interpreted it differently. He notes the change, starting in the eighteenth dynasty, from representing the king as a solitary demi-god to images of a royal family. In some cases the Great Wives of the king are portrayed as of almost the same rank. While the reasons for the decline stem from more than one cause, Dodson suggests that family infighting may have weakened the ruling power, leaving the country unable to fight off invasion. With copious illustrations, this book supplies intriguing insights into pharonic politics, arrived at through meticulous, knowledgeable research.
