Summary:
Carta executoria issued under the name of Philip III of Spain in favor of Juan de Mena Gutierrez of the town of Los Santos in the Spanish province of León, in response to his pleito de hidalguia (litigation to establish noble status), written in Granada and dated 14 April 1606. Later additions at beginning and end of manuscript (f. i recto-1r, 50r-51r).

Collation: Parchment, 52; 1⁴ (1 is pastedown) 2-4¹² 5⁸(+4) 6² (2 is pastedown); [i, 1-51]; modern foliation in pencil, lower right recto.
Layout: Written in 34 long lines; ruled in purple ink with double vertical bounding lines.
Script: Written in a rounded Gothic script.
Decoration: Painted full-page miniature of owner and family praying before an image of the Crucifixion (f. 1v); painted coat of arms (f. 2r); 13-line painted miniatures of Saint James vanquishing the Moors and Saint Bartholomew (f. 2v); 9-line historiated initial with portrait of Philip III (f. 49r); 15 illuminated initials, 6-line to 10-line, in gold on grounds of red or of red and blue, heightened with silver; calligraphic headings. Some illuminations worn or flaking.
Binding: Contemporary Spanish morocco, gilt-stamped, gilt-tooled, over pasteboards including sheets of early printed music.
