Summary:
Papers of members of Sicilian families, often of Spanish descent, and documents pertaining to some of the territories they inhabited. The documents that comprise the collection are divided into four series, the first dedicated to papers of members of various families; the second to documents concerning two regions in the province of Agrigento, Sicily, where many of these families lived and operated; the third to miscellaneous documents, primarily legal and financial; and the fourth to oversize items. The papers of families comprise documents pertaining to 8 different Sicilian families whose business (often sulfur mining and tax collection), genealogies, relationships with the Spanish crown (that granted them numerous privileges over the centuries) and with other local aristocrats are described in great detail. The second series consists of items relating to the Racalmuto and Ribera areas, in Agrigento, Sicily. The Racalmuto papers include numerous maps and photographs and mostly deal with the use, misuse, and rent of the local sulfur mines, a primary source of income for the noblemen in the area; the Ribera papers are primarily financial records documenting tax collection. The Miscellaneous series consists of wills; trial proceedings and expert witness reports (for trials related to the Racalmuto sulfur mines); documents concerning the Guardia Nazionale of Palermo, a branch of the armed forces very active during the revolution of 1848 and the subsequent years; maps; petitions; and various types of financial records. The Oversize series consists of larger items (including maps and genealogical tables), pertaining to various members of the aforementioned families, as well as newspaper sheets, tax records, and documents concerning the Guardia Nazionale of Palermo.
