Summary:
Young landowner Dai Liyan, afflicted with a chronic cough he imagines is tubercular, languishes in his sprawling, dilapidated estate, attended by his wife Yu Wen and loyal family retainer Lao Huang. Liyan's sister Dai Xiu, a giggly, high-spirited 16-year-old lives with them, a small bright spot in a pall of gloom. The unexpected arrival of Liyan's oldest childhood friend, Zhang Zhichen, temporarily energizes Liyan and the household, but circumstances change with the revelation that Yu Wen and Zhang Zhichen share a romantic past and still have feelings for each other. Instead of exploding into erotic fireworks, this story takes a very Chekhovian turn. Liyan must decide whether his wife's happiness is more important than having her near him, while Yu Wen must decide whether to do the right thing or to follow her heart. Moreover, Zhichen must decide whether his love for Yu Wen is worth the guilt and shame of betraying his friend.
