- Summary:
- "Painted in 1875, Thomas Eakins's Gross Clinic [also known as Portrait of Dr. Samuel D. Gross] is widely considered to be the greatest American painting of the nineteenth century. It is an icon of American culture both for its artistic merits and its subject: the internationally renowned surgeon Dr. Samuel Gross. This video recounts the dramatic campaign to keep the painting in Philadelphia when Thomas Jefferson University announced its plans to sell the picture in 2006. It also takes a behind-the-scenes look at the restoration of The Gross Clinic at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, detailing the extensive research undertaken by curators and conservators and the resulting important new findings about Eakins's painting techniques and the changes his paintings have undergone over time."--Container.
