Summary:
The words of Adlai E. Stevenson II, although spoken a half-century ago, resonate a profound relationship between us as human beings and our environment-one of interdependence and responsibility. The notions of protection and care communicated in those words echo a mantra that can be used effectively by designers as they explore the complex and interrelated facets of design problems and solutions to security in the built environment.
The federal government and some security agencies and personnel have attempted to address this urgent concern by establishing a dialogue on security, providing security guidelines and mandates, and offering an array of security-related products. Simultaneously, as the dialogue evolves, we find a wide array of approaches to addressing security, both from disciplinary expertise and interdisciplinary efforts. We also find discrepancies between theory and application; disconnection between problem and solution; and misconception about terminologies, and security solutions and their impacts.
Security and safety are ubiquitous and simultaneously loaded terms; they are not a matter of tempora. headlines during periods of fear and uncertainty, nor are they reserved for external threats. They are among the most basic and central of human needs and rights. Affording safe and secure environments ought not to be a means of increasing fear among stakeholders.
The interior designer's commitment to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public through his or her professional work demands that we become effective leaders and contributors in the creation and implementation of environments that embrace an integrated approach to safety and security. This approach must meet the psychological and physical needs of the built environments' users, while respecting the values, civics, and ethos of the context. The framework of Design and Security in the Built Environment is that when security is considered from the onset of a design problem, the outcome is a more sustainable and effective design solution, with a seamless connection between security and other functional, social, aesthetic, and economic considerations.
Conceptually and programmatically, this book deconstructs concepts of safety and security in the built environment while paying attention to contextual forces and the use of a systems approach. Enhanced by interdisciplinary exploration, this book is intended primarily for intermediate to advanced interior design students, as well as design educators, design professionals, and all those who are interested in the ways that issues of security affect people and the built environment.
