Album of negative photoreproductions of 17th-century editions of 4 plays by William Rowley, from originals held in the Malone Collection of the Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford: "A new wonder, a woman never vext" (ESTC S116272); "A match at mid-night" (ESTC S116268); "A shoo-maker a gentleman" (ESTC S116266); and "The birth of Merlin" (ESTC R7261). Each leaf of the album holds 2 photoreproductions; each reproduction (13 x 17-19 cm.) contains 2 pages of text. The album is annotated by Charles Wharton Stork, whose autograph appears on the front free endpaper.
Title from label on cover; the first word of lines 3, 4, and 5 each indicated by ditto marks beneath the word "Malone" in line 1.
The attribution of "The birth of Merlin" to William Shakespeare as well as William Rowley is not generally accepted. Cf. ESTC R7261.
Purchased by the Penn Libraries in 1933 for the Horace Howard Furness Memorial.
Upper and lower boards and back and front free endpapers of album are detached from bookblock; backstrip wanting; the 2 photoreproductions formerly mounted on the first leaf (each torn at top right corner) have been detached and laid in.
