Summary:
Araya is an old natural salt mine located on a peninsula in northeastern Venezuela. In 1959, when Margot Benacerraf documented the life of the "salineros", the salt mine was still manually being exploited, five hundred years after its discovery by the Spanish. What Benacerraf documents is an archaic way of life that would ultimately disappear with the arrival of industrial methods of exploitation.
