Summary:
Several symposia have considered cultural links between the eastern Mediterranean island north and west during prehistoric times, but here European archaeologists look at links east to the Syro-Palestinian coast and Asia Minor, and south to Egypt. They report on such matters as the origin of the name Ionian, old and new evidence of contacts and interactions between Rhodes and Cyprus, East Greek and Cypriote ceramics of the Archaic period, comparing the standing draped female figure in the Archaic art of Cyprus and the Eastern Aegean, Cypriote terracottas from Miletus, limestone figurines recently found at the Archaic sanctuary of Apollo in the territory of Knidos, and Ionian styles in Cypriote sculpture of the sixth century BC.
