Summary:
Clasped vellum-bound volume of 69 leaves, containing chiefly medicinal recipes for a variety of ailments and afflictions compiled by Thomas Taylor of Gloucestershire, England, from 1758 to 1794. Taylor cites and dates each medical preparation. Several begin "Dr. Bathrust" along with the name of the individual being treated, including: "Dr. Bathrust's advice for myself in an ague complaint" of 12 November 1770 and "Dr. Bathrust's advice to my brother ... rheumatic disorder," indicating that Taylor knew the doctor. There are recipes for rheumatism, ague, to stop bleeding, coughs, and a myriad of others complaints. In addition to the medical recipes are veterinary prescriptions to treat horses; a handful of cookery recipes, for example, wine and gingerbread; household recipes for items such as ink; and entries on personal grooming. There are instructions for charms and making of amulets to cure ague and other ailments. Taylor also includes epitaphs from grave sites, instructions for card tricks, and a parlor trick. Laid in the volume are seven leaves containing a few medicinal recipes, some poems, a count of the parishes in England and Wales, and a ledger page of bills received dated 1801.
