Summary:
For some 20 years, Sprott (U. of Wisconsin-Madison) has been seeking the mathematically simplest systems of various types that can exhibit chaos, and has indeed found a number that are simpler in some sense than previous ones, or are otherwise more elegant because of such features as the number of parameters, some special symmetry, or economy of notation. Here he shares his harvest, along with similar examples that have been known for a long time, or have been recently discovered by other researchers. After setting out the fundamentals, he rings through different kinds of systems: periodically forced, autonomously dissipative and conservative, low-dimensional and high-dimensional, circular, spatio-temporal, time-delay, and chaotic electric.
