- Summary:
- Meant as an introduction to Tyconius's Liber regularum, this book examines Tyconius' criteria for the selection of biblical texts. It seeks to understand both the "logic" of the seven rules and the logic of the author's structuring of the book as a whole. Its purpose is then to answer the central question of how this literary structure throws light on the hermeneutical theory that underlies Tyconius's description of the seven "mystical rules" of Scripture. Bright displays the chiastic structure of the Rules as a clue to deciphering the Tyconis' interpretive theory and she interprets the Rules as an extended typological interpretation of the Bible revealing the 'mystery of inquiry' at work in the church that calls sinners to repentance. She hopes to have fulfilled the need for a contemporary appraisal of Tyconius' interpretive methodology at a time when the whole nature and purpose of scriptural exegesis has become revolutionized. Her work invites readers to carefully reconsider and appreciate afresh the hermeneutics of the early church when discussing the role of the Holy Spirit in discerning the "spiritual sense" of Scripture. It is also helpful for those interested in how the early church treated the prophetic corpus and understood the use of quotations of the Old Testament into the New, as well as for those pastors who, like Tyconius, are intent on orienting their Bible hermeneutics to their pastoral situation.
