Summary:
A landmark anthology, LGBT identity and Online New Media is the first to critically introduce and examine constructions of LGBT identity within new media. Almost entirely composed of original essays, this anthology analyzes new media against the historical, generic, and iconic influences of older media such as television, film, and print to discern the unique possibilities that new media offer for the construction of LGBT identity. While some of the new media discussed are MySpace, Facebook, Youtube.com, gay men's health websites, gay message boards, and transsexual craigslist ads, among others, a few of the many possibilities include opportunities for virtual coming out, connecting to and constructing communities, establishing identity ideals, and composition of self-narratives via blogs. In detailing the possibilities of these constructions, the collection also presents a theoretically sophisticated dissection of the effects, issues, influences, benefits, and disadvantages of the constructions themselves.
The result is a pioneering interdisciplinary study that will prove essential reading for anyone interested in the topics of gender, sexuality, and identity as they intersect with media studies, cultural, studies, sociology, and notably politics. Book jacket.
