Summary:
Copy made by Gertrude Frenzel-Koehler, in a calligraphic hand, of the verse version of Goethe's play Iphigenie auf Tauris. The main body of the text is in black ink; initials of speeches are in red or blue ink; and initials of scenes are in 2 colors or 2 shades, using various combinations of red, blue, and gold ink. The initials of acts are embellished with swirling patterns in all three colors. Headings and characters' names are in red or blue. The title page (f. 1r) is dated the year of Goethe 1949 (Goethejahr 1949), alluding to the 200th anniversary of the poet's birth. The manuscript comprises 10 numbered, folio-size gatherings that are continuously paginated, with the first gathering (3 bifolia) enclosing the others. A stub (between p. 81 and 82) remains where one leaf has been cut away. Included is a handmade bookmark (laid in), written and decorated in the same style as the manuscript. It bears the following dedication, dated Hellerau, 5 July 1949, to Professor Ernst Jockers, at the University of Pennsylvania: Goethe, Iphigenie, meinen [sic], verehrten, lieben Freund Ernst Jockers gewidmet, Gertrude Frenzel-Koehler.
