Summary:
Copy made by Gertrude Frenzel-Koehler, in a calligraphic hand, of Goethe's 3-poem cycle entitled Trilogie der Leidenschaft. The titles of the 3 individual poems (An Werther; Elegie; Aussöhnung) are in blue ink, while the bodies of the poems are in black ink, except for the first 2 lines of Elegie, which are in blue (those lines are also set apart on a separate page). Initials of stanzas are usually in blue ink, and once in red. The manuscript comprises 2 folio-size gatherings (of 3 and 6 bifolia, respectively), enclosed within another bifolium. A general title page (Dichtungen von Johann Wolfgang von Goethe; f. 1r) is followed by a title page bearing the name of the poem cycle (f. 2r). Both title pages are dated Hellerau, 1948. The entire manuscript is, in turn, enclosed in a contemporary paper folder. The folder is labeled, in Frenzel-Koehler's hand, as intended for Professor Ernst Jockers, University of Pennsylvania, from Frenzl-Koehler, district of Hellerau, Dresden. On the verso of the folder is a note, also in her hand, conveying greetings from her husband, the architect Arthur Frenzel (Herzliche Grüsse von meinem Mann).
