Arimbi (English literature, Airlangga U. Surabaya, Indonesia) explores how four contemporary Indonesian Muslim women writers present gender-related issues and portray Indonesian Muslim women in their narratives. They are Titis Basino P. I., Ratna Indraswari Ibrahim, Abidah El Khalieqy, and Helvy Tiana Rosa. She also investigates a variety of the aesthetic forms and narrative styles and structures in the writings, showing how issues of aesthetic are intertwined inseparably with issues of gender constructions, power representation, identity, and prevailing ideology. Comparative perspectives look at how gender issues in Indonesia differ from those elsewhere, and how the portrayal of women in Indonesia affects perceptions of women in other Islamic societies.
