- Summary:
- Classic film that documents the coping behaviors of children, ages 4-8, as they attempt to manage the pain and worry of hospitalization. Shows that in stressful situations children adjust better when they understand exactly what is happening to them. Follows two girls through their hospitalization and contrasts their experiences and emotional responses. Mary Francis, age 5, was admitted for five days to treat an infection. She was prepared for the admission and it was her second hospital stay. Diane, age 4, sustained a traumatic injury requiring an emergency admission. Shows the girls as they face separation, painful procedures, hospital routine, and interactions with health care staff and other children. Also looks at a play session for a group of boys, ages 6-9, directed by a social group worker. The group is offered medical equipment and dolls for doctor play. Through play each child demonstrates understanding of his own situation and expresses his concerns.
