- Summary:
- Presents speech training of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). Shows chimpanzee doing normal vocalizations for anticipation of food ("food bark"), play ("laugh") and apprehension ("cry" and "scream"). Chimps are trained to vocalize upon command or as a request for food. Viki the chimp makes vocalizations that resemble the consonant sounds of "p", "k", and "t". After many months of training, Viki combines these sounds to speak three words, "mama", "papa", and "cup", upon command.
