Originally produced in 1914 as a 20-episode theatrical serial, the version that survives is a shortened and rearranged 9-chapter version, which was released in Europe in 1916. Intertitles were translated rather carelessly back into English from a Belgian print sometime during or after World War I, when the villain's name was changed from Owen to the German-sounding Koerner.
