- Summary:
- The Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN) collected data from women between the ages of 40 through 55 who represented different ethnic groups in Boston, Massachusetts, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Oakland and Los Angeles, California, Chicago, Illinois, Detroit, Michigan, and Newark, New Jersey. These data are intended to represent women in mid-life living in the United States and to assess those factors associated with age at natural menopause, prevalence of surgical menopause, symptoms of menopause, health status, and health care usage. The data include questions about doctor visits, medical conditions, medications, treatments and procedures, relationships, smoking, and menopause related information such as age at pre-, peri- and post-menopause, self-attitudes and feelings, and common physical problems associated with menopause. Also included in the data are background characteristics (age, race, occupation, education, marital status, and family size).
