Summary:
The purpose of the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is to obtain information about the amount and distribution of illness, its effects in terms of disability and chronic impairments, and the types of health services people receive. The 1974 Medical Care supplement provides 130 variables from the core Person File (see HEALTH INTERVIEW SURVEY, 1974 [ICPSR 8339]) including sex, age, race, marital status, veteran status, education, income, industry and occupation codes, and limits on activity. The 60 variables unique to this Supplement include items on type of doctor visits (private vs. group practice), place of care, number of doctor visits in the last 12 months, type of doctor usually seen, payment source for doctor bills, problems getting care in the past year, and type of medical services received in the last 12 months.
