Summary:
This data collection consists of a cumulative file of the Politbarometer East surveys of 1990, which queried citizens of East Germany. Though questions concerning parties and politicians are identical for each Politbarometer, some questions targeting political opinions vary with each survey administration. Respondents were asked about important political problems in the German Democratic Republic, satisfaction with democracy, parties preferred, voting behavior in the last election, preferred party for a unified German Parliament, attitudes toward unification of the two Germanies, and preferred name for the unified Germany. Other questions included attitudes toward socialism, opinions on the economic situation in East Germany and in West Germany, attitudes toward abortion and the stance of political parties on abortion, reading habits, interest in politics, and attitudes toward Great Britain, France, the Soviet Union, and the United States.
