Summary:

This special topic poll, fielded October 8-10, 1998, sought respondents' views on the upcoming November 1998 congressional elections and other political issues. Those queried were asked for their opinions of President Bill Clinton, the United States Congress, and the Democratic and Republican parties' handling of the impeachment. Their views were sought on the United States House of Representatives' recent vote to begin a formal inquiry into whether Clinton should be impeached, and the open-ended format of those hearings, patterned on the Watergate hearings. Respondents were asked to assess the influence of candidates' stances on impeachment on their electoral decisions. They were also asked whether they intended to re-elect their congressional representative, whether their decision was driven by a desire to express support for Clinton or to express opposition to Clinton, and how likely it was that they would vote in the November elections. Additional questions addressed the future of Clinton's second term, and whether the ongoing investigations had been for the purpose of ascertaining the truth or to hurt Clinton politically.
