Summary:

This poll is part of a continuing series of monthly surveys that solicit public opinion on the presidency and on a range of other political and social issues. Respondents were asked to give their opinions of President Bill Clinton and his handling of foreign policy, the economy, race relations, and the situation with Iraq. Those queried were also asked to give their opinions of Vice President Al Gore, First Lady Hillary Clinton, Texas Governor George W. Bush Jr., Microsoft Corporation CEO Bill Gates, Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, the United States Congress, and the respondents' congressional representative. A series of questions addressed the similarities and differences among the president, congressional Democrats, and congressional Republicans on the following topics: the economy, crime, foreign affairs, education, national defense, the middle class, federal taxes, morals and values, the federal budget, campaign finance reform, Social Security, Medicare, the poor, the environment, illegal drugs, and health care. Respondents were asked whether they supported proposed changes in the Medicare plan that would allow people to buy Medicare coverage earlier than the qualification age of 65, whether the federal minimum wage should be raised, whether federal taxes on cigarettes and other tobacco products should be raised, and whether government spending on child-care programs for low-income parents should be increased. A series of questions covered respondents' interest in the professional sports of football, basketball, and baseball. Other topics covered the growth and future of Microsoft Corporation, the sexual harassment charges by former Arkansas state employee Paula Jones against President Clinton, the weather phenomenon El Nino, 1998 congressional elections, and a possible 2000 presidential race between Democrat Al Gore and Republican George Bush Jr. Background i...
